As a member of the Santa Teresa High School Band Program, you will be a member of one of the most exciting and fastest growing band programs in the Silicon Valley. You must have the motivation, desire, and willingness to put in the time and energy to continue this success. Band is a group in which strong friendships and lasting relationships develop. All that will be asked of you is that you follow instructions, understand the policies and obey them, and above all always work to the best of your ability while HAVING FUN!!!

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
The Santa Teresa Band Program is open to all students currently enrolled at Santa Teresa High School who have been enrolled in a band program prior to attending Santa Teresa and/or students with instructor consent to enroll. We do not offer a beginning band program at the high school level. Competency on a band instrument must be demonstrated to participate. The three bands that we offer are Concert Band , Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble . In addition to these ensembles, we also offer three Jazz Bands .
Membership in the Jazz Bands is by audition only and all of these students must also be enrolled in Concert Band , Symphonic Band , or Wind Ensemble (bass, piano, and guitar players are exempt from this requirement).
Marching Band is a part of the Santa Teresa Band curriculum that occurs during the first 10 weeks of school. Participation in marching band is not required. Attendance at the marching band camp is required for all members in the marching band. If you do not attend marching band camp (August 11-22) you are NOT guaranteed a spot in the field show. All marching band students must be enrolled in Concert Band , Symphonic Band , or Wind Ensemble as per director (Color Guard members are excluded from this requirement).
There is a cost associated with participation (details regarding contributions will be distributed by our booster association, Santa Teresa Music and Arts Association or STMAA). The Marching Band performs at select football games and events during the season. Our Marching Band competes as a member of the Western Band Association Marching Band Circuit.
Auditions for the Symphonic Band , Wind Ensemble , and Jazz Band I are held in the spring. Membership in these ensembles is exclusively for students selected from grades 10- 12. Auditions for Jazz Band II/III will be held during the fall once school has started. Students selected for this ensemble will register for Jazz Band II/III as an eighth period and will receive performing arts credit for the class second semester. This ensemble begins rehearsing occasionally after school during marching band and rehearses regularly after school once marching band is over. The rehearsal schedule is based on student and director availability. The Jazz Bands and Wind Ensemble have several performances outside of school throughout the year, including festivals and additional trips. Additional fundraising is required for ALL ENSEMBLES in order for these ensembles to participate in festivals and have the necessary resources for great music to be made.
9th Graders (both winds and percussion) are automatically placed in Concert Band . If spots are available in Symphonic Band after the spring auditions are held for students in grades 10- 12, 9th graders will be given the opportunity to audition for placement in Symphonic Band in the fall.
Brass & Woodwind Workshops are ensembles that meet outside the school day. These ensembles are offered free to students currently enrolled in the Santa Teresa Band Program, future students (incoming 9th graders), and alumni. The focus of these two ensembles is the development of technique and musicality specific to the brass and woodwind families as well as learning music specific to these two unique instrumentations. These ensembles start in the winter (following the conclusion of marching band) and also meet throughout the summer.
Color Guard (The Sport of the Arts) is a performance-oriented competitive activity that incorporates dance and theatrics as well as traditional equipment (flag, rifle, and sabre) in order to create an environment for hands on learning. Both traditional and non-traditional dance forms are utilized in order to support performance of a specific character as well as creating optimal technique training on equipment. Discipline, teamwork, and respect come from thorough and rigorous training from a highly-experienced and well trained staff.
Musical Theater Pit Orchestra is a group of students selected by Ms. Bounds to accompany the musical theater productions. Instrumentation is based upon the needs of the individual production.

Each band member must turn in all of the above forms. No student will be allowed to travel with any ensemble until these forms are completed in full. Parents and students please take the time to fill out all the forms needed to participate in the band program this year. ALL BAND STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO TURN IN ALL THEIR FORMS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance is an important part of both school day and after school rehearsals. Attendance will be taken promptly at the beginning of each rehearsal. Students who are not in their seat or in the designated place for the beginning of rehearsal with their instrument assembled and ready to play, at the scheduled starting time, will be considered tardy. Students will receive a grade based on meeting established standards and participation in class. Since it is impossible to participate if one is absent or tardy, every day attendance in class is very important, regardless if the student is excused for their absence. Everyone is important to the progress of the band, and like any team, if you do not show up you are letting your section, as well as the whole band down. Students may not have more than 3 unexcused absences in any ensemble during the school year. If a student exceeds this amount, they may forfeit their position in extra ensembles (ensembles outside of the school day, such as Jazz Band II), or be suspended from performing with the ensembles. Absences will only be considered excused if the student clears them through the attendance office OR communication between the student?s parent and Ms. Bounds has occurred. Students may not excuse their own absences.
